Best Brightening Products

Summer is sadly coming to a close, and regardless of how much SPF you’ve doused yourself in, chances are, you’re still seeing the results of UV rays (hopefully not much because you’ve limited your sun time and always worn a hat and sunnies along with your SPF).

With fall right around the bend, it only seemed fitting to write a piece on brightening products that’ll remove the sun damage, even out the skin tone, and give you that coveted glow up. Below are my favorite products for post-sun, uber brightening effects.

1. Kora Organics Turmeric 2-in-1 Brightening & Exfoliating Mask ($48) – This is a new product in my line up and I’ve got to say, I’m loving the results. Besides the fact that it’s completely toxin-free, it actually works to lighten dark spots and brighten the overall complexion. While it’s a mask and scrub combined (love a multitasking product), it’s also ideal for removing dead cells, resulting in smooth, glowing skin within minutes.

2. MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect 10% Vitamin C Corrective Serum ($399) – It’s pricey, but the results are real (hence why fans include A-listers like Serena Williams). With 10% stabilized vitamin C, this serum lightens, tightens, and brightens, aiding in hyper pigmentation, sun damage, and age spots. It’s also a seriously good serum for anti-aging, thanks to the antioxidant-rich formula.

3. IS Clinical White Lightening Serum ($128) – Another favorite brightener, this serum is more like a hardcore treatment that effectively minimizes the appearance of dark spots. It is my go-to discoloration product that doesn’t contain hydroquinone. I spot treat areas of my face with it at night, never during the day.

4. Farmacy Honeymoon Glow AHA Resurfacing Night Serum ($58) – They call it a honeymoon glow, because you wake up with that gorgeous glow that only true love leaves behind — that and some powerful ingredients. AHA and BHA exfoliate and even the skin tone, while hyaluronic acid and honey moisturize so that you’re not stripping the healthy oils from your face. The result is skin that looks — and feels — divine.

5. Dr. Barbara Sturm Brightening Serum ($310) – I’m a huge Dr. Barbara Sturm fan, and this Brightening Serum is one more win for the skincare brand. I actually like to use it around my eyes as it really helps to trouble shoot stubborn dark circles (hello lack of sleep), but it’s also the ideal serum for anti-aging and brightening results.

6. Cle de Peau Intensive Brightening Mask ($30) – This sheet mask is legit! It brightens and smoothes in minutes, and the additional serum can be rubbed into face, neck, and décolletage for added glow. I use this mask before a special event — like a first date or a party — because my skin literally shines post-mask.

All Things Eye Sheet Masks

A few years back, K-beauty products made their way overseas, and we’ve been #obsessed ever since. Who could blame us, have you seen the skin of Korean models? Like silk. One K-beauty staple we’re particularly fond of is the  eye sheet mask. It seems that Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber are obsessed as well.

Sheet masks are great all on their own, drenching the skin with nutrient-rich serums to fight dryness, dullness, and fine lines and wrinkles. And the clean up? A breeze. Just remove and discard. Eye sheet masks offer the benefit of targeted treatment, necessary for the delicate, paper-thin skin of the eye area. And eyes are usually the first to show signs of aging, so better start using eye cream like crazy and don a few eye sheet masks throughout the week for better eyes tomorrow.

Read on for a few tips to get the most out of eye sheet masks:

– Use them when they matter, like before an event, say a wedding or a hot date…your eyes will look all bright and glowy immediately, so take advantage and use them when all eyes will be on your eyes.

– Put eye sheet masks in the freezer for a few minutes before using, this will allow the sheet masks to cool the eye area too, instantly reducing inflammation and tightening blood vessels that cause under eye circles to peak out. A two-for-one.

– Also, feel free to apply a little eye cream or serum before donning eye sheets masks for an extra kick. The masks help the skin absorb better by acting as a barrier and pushing all those good-for-skin ingredients into the dermis.

– In need of eye sheet masks? Cut a regular sheet mask into little strips to place under eyes when you wan to “mask” eyes, but not your entire face. Sheet masks are also super easy to make, try these DIY eye sheet masks.

From Ages 15-19: How to Properly Take Care of Your Skin

The key to taking care of teenage skin is treating breakouts and oiliness without making your skin too dry. A lot of teenage skin problems fall under the umbrella of congested skin because of the change in hormones and stress. So let’s try to look over the 4 basic ways you can start taking care of your skin.

Teenage Skincare Tips

Cleansing Tips for Teenage Skin

This is the most important product for teenagers. I remember when I was 15, I had no idea that cleansing was essential. I used to skip using cleanser when I was lazy, until I noticed my skin getting worse and breaking out. My mom always use to give me her cleanser to use and insisted on me washing my face twice a day. It is also preferable that you wash your face as soon as you’re home so the dirt, oil and pollution doesn’t sit on the skin too long. If you breakout a lot avoid cleansers with fragrance or a lot of oils.

Find something to detox and purify without being too drying or stripping your skin. Because, even though you will be tempted to really over-clean and scrub your skin, that actually does the opposite where it starts to produce even more excess oil to make up for the lost hydration and therefore makes you breakout.

Moisturizing Tips for Teenagers

I know a lot of you are tempted to skip this step, especially if you’re oily. But keeping your skin hydrated is absolutely essential and you should try not to skip this step, at least once a day. If you have oily skin use lightweight gel formula, like the Clinique one below. If you have dry skin you can go for a thicker moisturizer.

You should also take care to moisturize your body, especially the elbows and knees. That way you can help avoid dead skin from forming and darkening your skin.undefined

Masks for Teenage Skin

Masks are a good idea, once a week to kind of reverse and detoxify the skin from any congestion, blocked pores and built up oil. If you have oily skin, clay masks will be your new best friend, but don’t forget to moisturize afterwards. If you have dry skin the first Glossier mask below is a moisturizing mask that is also soothing and will give your skin a pump of hydration.

The Pimples and Teenage Acne

We’re doing a big article soon on acne and how to deal with it.  However, we still wanted to brief you on what to watch out for. First of all remember to let your skin breathe. Don’t apply makeup and foundation everyday and remember to  always wash off make up before bed! It’s a must. Also, always keep your hands clean before putting them your face and regularly clean your phone because it’s probably the dirtiest thing we own and we put it on our face at least 5 times a day.

Also when it comes to treating your skin and your teenage skincare routine, try not to do too much.  Keep the routine basic, minimal and effective. Of course, don’t pop your pimples, believe me I regret it till this day, because it creates scars that take forever to go away.

If you want to treat breakouts or pimples on the spot, here’s an article on the products that will heal them quickly for you.

When I was in school this product below saved my skin from millions of little blemishes and pimples on my forehead…
